This crochet pickle pattern came about because a coworker tagged me in a post featuring an "emotional support pickle" and I asked if she would like me to host a crochet class where we all make pickles.
This was also the first time I had heard of hiding a pickle ornament in the tree and giving a gift to the person who found it. What a fun tradition!
In preparation for the class, I worked up this cute little guy. I thought I would share the pattern for free for you all!
The larger of the pickles ended up much looser than I expected, so I will recommend a smaller hook than what I used. But the little one is so cute! My boyfriend immediately said, "It looks like a gherkin." I agree with him!
My personal notes for this pattern are related to the embroidery. I need to practice more! The mouth still looks odd to me.
Pattern Supplies
For the large pickle:
G (4mm) hook
4 (Medium) Worsted Cotton, such as any given in this Yarnsub listing
12mm Safety eyes
Embroidery thread in pink and black
Tapestry needle
Polyfill
Stitch marker (I sell some pretty ones!)
For the smaller pickle:
D (3.25mm) hook
3 (Light) DK Cotton
I used Lion Brand Coboo, but Yarnsub suggests these similar yarns
6mm Safety eyes
Embroidery thread in pink and black
Tapestry needle
Polyfill
Stitch marker (Check out my shop!)
Notes on Selecting Yarns
I encourage playing with different sizes and materials! When making an amigurumi, I tend to work at one hook size below the recommended for the yarn because I crochet very tight. Sometimes, I work two hook sizes below, depending on the fiber and if it has natural stretch. You could make a tiny little pickle out of crochet thread, but I would recommend a steel hook, likely around 1.25mm. Or, you could make an enormous pickle out of blanket yarn! You may want a 6-8mm hook in that case, depending on the yarn.
Remember to adjust the amount of the rest of your supplies accordingly! A tiny pickle with crochet thread will need its eyes beaded or embroidered, as safety eyes rarely come smaller than 6mm. A huge pickle will need much larger eyes, perhaps felted or buttons!
This pattern is already so silly. Look at us talking about what size eyes your pickle needs.

Embroider the cheeks at round 11 or 12

Begin stuffing with polyfill. Work the polyfill in gently to avoid lumps.
Finish stuffing as the next few rounds are worked, being careful not to over-stuff.

Bind off with a long tail. Using a tapestry needle and the excess yarn, cinch the bottom of the pickle closed. Weave in the ends and clip the tail. If there is enough left over, use the yarn you just trimmed as a loop to hang the pickle by looping it around a stitch at the top of the pickle.
